Custom Wool, Hand-Finished Staircase Rug Runner in Willow Glenn, California.

Rug runners are a beautiful, functional way to give your forgotten spaces (like hallways and staircases) a lift, while protecting your hard surface floors from damage. This project from a home in Willow Glenn, California, is a great example of how an accent rug can make a world of difference!

THE CHALLENGE

The home already had a beautiful, European Oak staircase that matched the flooring used throughout the home. The stairs were accented with a striking, black, wrought-iron banister. The banister seemed to overpower the softness of the light wood and rendered the stairs nearly invisible.

THE DESIGN SOLUTION

The space called for a solution that would tie the banister, the staircase and the pervasive hardwood flooring together to create energy and cohesiveness, comfort and elegance all at once.

To achieve that, Cypress Hue Principal Designer and Floortex Design Partner, Hector E. Campuzano Aguilar, designed a custom rug runner for the space.

The design began with black and grey Rivine carpet from Prestige Mills that featured vertical stripes that would run the length of the staircase. The carpet, made of 100%, handloomed wool, was cut to fit the space precisely, and then hand bound with custom-tanned, black leather. It was finished with hammered gold tacks, inlayed with black. This coordinated nicely with the speckled background of the runner.

THE MAKING OF A CUSTOM RUG RUNNER: 4 Key Steps

  1. The rug was cut to the design specifications of the designer.
  2. The next step was to bind the rug. Delivered tanned and uncut to our rugmaker, soft leather cowhide was hand cut into 4-inchin wide strips – and bound in our rugmaking shop.
  3. Next, the rug was transported to the site, where our rugmaker installed it step by step (literally), altering the layout when needed to ensure a precise fit.
  4. The rug was finished with hammered, gold tacks (four per step).

The final rug is beautiful, functional, durable. And it is an elegant solution that enhances the space perfectly.
