As a child of the 70s, I remember what was considered stylish and trendy was very clear. Long hair, bell bottoms, linoleum, and lots of olive green and gold. What was classic was also clear. The simple black dress. Pinstripes. Hardwood floors. Handloomed Persian rugs.

But 2024 is different. You no longer have to choose between classic and trending styles. In fact, the lines between the two are intentionally being blurred.

The color of the year for 2024 is Peach Fuzz, a sign of the zeitgeist of our time. Peach Fuzz is a soft, hopeful shade that hints at velvety elegance and beckons back to the neutral tones of yesteryear. It is soothing, nostalgic and elegant all at once. And it is changing the way interior design and handcrafted rugs are being done.

Contrast Peach Fuzz with 2023’s color of the year – bright, bold Magenta – and you realize that 2024’s designs won’t be coming from dramatic color contrasts, but from somewhere else.

According to Floortex Design’s own rug expert, Hector Luevano, weaving techniques will be the difference maker in handloomed carpet and area rugs this year. “Our top mills have perfected their looming techniques,” says Hector. “Now they are taking things to the next level.”

Ashley Stark Wagner: “Ashley Stark combines flat and round weaves for a beautifully layered look” beautiful effect.”

Trend setters, like Stanton Carpet and Ashley Stark Home are already combining shimmering peach with light neutrals like bone and ecru, and then mixing yarns and looming patterns that have never been paired before. The results are truly stunning.

Flat weaves merged with rounded yarns. Rough, sturdy materials layered with soft, subtle fibers. Classic, handloomed herringbones and chevrons mixed with thicker yarns. Delicate ribbon and sleek leather are  being woven into hardy Berber. You’ll see Jutes and natural grasses spun into carpet to create intricate, layered designs. All of it is designed to create a more casual, even-bohemian look that remains elegant.

Rosecore and Crescent, Stanton’s premier rug lines, are also creating exciting new looks with embroidery. They are taking flat weave carpet and stitching dimensional designs on top of it. The surfaces can vary from dramatic, eye-popping imagery to simple, subtle waves of texture.

On the whole, these rugs and carpets are used to create (or complete) a graceful room design.

BRINGING OUTDOORS INDOORS

STANTON-ROSECORE Metropolis Thunder: “Hand-loomed platinum rug with Floral embroidery from Rosecore”

If you are looking for soft surface products that serve a more functional role, the trend that began last year continues this year. Rug mills are bringing traditionally-outdoor materials inside the home. Prestige and Stark are using hardy Seagrass and polypropylene products to create colorful, durable area rugs that can stand up to red wine spills and muddy pawprints alike. Yarns are often solution-dyed to prevent fading so all-day sun is no longer an issue.

And don’t forget fabulous wool! Manufacturers are blending durable synthetics with wools so you get the depth and softness of wool, but with a new level of durability.

Those are the color and design trends we are seeing for 2024. Whether you are planning to freshen your home with new rug designs or to protect hardwood floors with something stunning and strong – look for peaches, neutrals and graceful, textured, classic-to-casual weaves.
